dns crypt is meant to encrypt dns requests so it will be more secure but a little slower. so give it a go and see.
Wait, are you talking about DNS used while connected to your VPN or when not connected? Depending on your OS and how you connect, your DNS settings should be being pulled from your VPN provider and used exclusively anyway. In that case, not only is it likely fastest (most VPN providers host DNS on the same server as the VPN tunnel) but it’s also encrypted by default as all your DNS requests are going through the tunnel. If you don’t trust your VPN provider with your DNS traffic, you have bigger problems than its speed. If you mean while not using your VPN, then sure you can use something like dnscrypt-proxy or Stubby, and have your OS (or software) switch dynamically when connecting to the VPN server.
Just avoid using your ISPs DNS. You can use Quad 1 (my choice), Quad 9, Google DNS or Open DNS. You can install DNSCrypt to prevent DNS leaks or even AB-Solution ad blocker if you have a compatible router.
