  1. I know that some websites blacklist VPNs for the fact that some of the people hiding their digital identity are doing so to protect themselves when attacking a website. So maybe it’s not the fear of other people using the same VPN, but rather the fear of an attack on their website from people using a VPN.

  2. then use a vpn hosted by a hosting provider and not a vpn company. And yes…vpns are always looked upon as a negative thing. Companies and goverments dont like privacy…they like complete control and transparency on everything you do online…has always been this way…and will always be.

  3. I’ve been using TaxAct for the last few years do to their good price and the product. This year they’ve gated certain forms behind paywalls and want to collect over $100 from me for me to do my taxes. Fuck that.

  4. Tax fraud is big business for scammers, and quick online filing sites will get left holding the bag when someone uses a VPN to hide their non-residence as they file for a refund in the name of some schmuck whose info they just purchased. It is not in their interest to let you hide where you are coming from and definitely not in their interest to allow sites that enable foreign actors to try to run tax fraud scams. To file your taxes you already need to give them a ton of confidential information, so what benefit is the VPN providing here?

If taxact is using https with a good cert then you are covered and the VPN brings nothing to the party. And yes, financial institutions definitely up the potential fraud score for a transaction when you use a VPN. Contra the ‘security theatre’ claims some will make, the people setting the policy are not dumb and they also have access to a huge dataset of fraudulent transactions so they know what means scammers use to try to game the system and will shut these routes down if the cost exceeds the benefit.

  5. It’s specious at best.

If Tax Act’s servers are using SSL and properly configured there is virtually no risk of anyone but you and Tax Act seeing your data.

SSL creates a secure connection between you and the end point. The only thing anyone in the middle can see is random encrypted data no matter what additional transports may be used.

Tell them you want the real reason.

  6. Their reasoning is garbage unless they’re somehow not using https (in which case, their service is the garbage). But a lot of sites “ban” known VPN servers for obvious reasons…their usage increases the likelihood of illicit activity by a metric fuckton. You can imagine how that could manifest on a tax website.

  7. > Is this a common practice that will spread across financial institutions?

    Yes, very much so.

    > Will banks begin to bar the use of VPNs when logging into accounts?

They already have done. It’s very easy to detect if you’re using a VPN, there are several ways to doing this.

    > I’m curious of this forum’s thoughts on the matter.

Because they demand that, we the people, become totally transparent.

  8. Sounds like placebo security to mask an underlying lack of it. I’d place money on this website also banning the usage of “certain characters” in their passwords.

    This is especially egregious:
    > anyone who has access to the VPN could potentially access your information

Because that statement _should_ be an outright lie. If the website is doing their job properly, it should be _impossible_ for those who “have access to the VPN” (even administrators) to access your information.

I personally would not use the website if this is what their developers believe.
