1. I’ve never had experience of routers breaking down after a few years. I’ve been using an Asus AC68u for Client VPN, VPN Server, DDNS and a few other things for about 4 years without issue. It replaced an Asus N66u which I used for a good few years before that – it was still working when I sold it – I only replaced it as I wanted a new shiny router!

2. Ubiquiti is “Enterprise” but i consider them high-end consumer to SMB and not Enterprise. If you get one of their Unifi or Edge lines, they should last you 5-7 years w/o issue.

   Check out the Unifi Security Gateway and the EdgeRouter X. Those may be options. I personally own the USG-PRO-4, but wish I could afford a nice SonicWall or Cisco.

3. Routers don’t just break after a few years, unless it’s a really shitty one.
   But you can also build a dedicated computer for routing. You have choices between a PC, a server or a computer board, depending on your usage. If you have a PC including a HTPC or mini PC, or a family central server/NAS that is on 24/7, then use that as a router. If not, I recommend using a computer board like raspberry pi or beaglebone etc. for lower power consumption. There are plenty of guides online, although you will still need basic knowledge of linux and networking.

4. Instead of using the typical cheapo router hardware, you could use something like this:

   This is just one example — there are many boards like this available, which are made for networking/routing.

   Using any router can be hit and miss — some can last a very long time, some die after a few months.
