Android 7 has the doze feature which can affect the functionality of a VPN. Im pretty sure you just need to go to Settings and look for Battery. Tap the menu button and select Battery optimization. Select the option All apps. This will show all the apps on your device and if it says Optimizing for battery use underneath it means that Doze has that particular app selected. Look for your VPN and select Don’t optimize.
