It creates a tunnel interface and connects it to the vpn.

From the perspective of openvpn, not automatically. The vm has its own ip address and default gateway. The issue is that the vpn server doesnt have a route to your vm’s ip address. This can be solved on the server side, but requires configuration.

This makes sense as it will now effectively use the same address the vpn server already knows how to get to.
