  1. Use a different vpn to pay, or a public library. And make sure to pay using gift cards that you buy with cash while wearing a ski mask. Can’t be too careful these days.

  2. If your vpn provider is allowing you to pay anonymously, it will probably also do not log your connection when you are using it.
Also even if the VPN provider knows from where you’re connecting during the time you are using his service, you can use it from a connection with a temporary IP adress or from an hotspot.

So the point to pay anonymously is to add a layer of security.

    Cheers

  3. You are correct that for many users it simply gives no real benefit. Here are a few scenarios that might benefit:

    * Routing through TOR or a different VPN, then to your anonymously purchased VPN, they don’t capture your true IP.
    * Using the anonymously purchased VPN only on public wifi and IP addresses that can’t be traced to you.
    * It is possible some law enforcement agencies (FBI, NSA, etc), whether through warrant, honeypot, hacking, or *other* obtain the customer list of VPN and cross-check it to other *lists* they have. In that instance they could be taking connection IPs also, but names are more permanent and valuable.

  4. It’s really just a shifting of the responsibility and while the VPN provider may know your IP, hopefully you did the research to ensure the one you are using does not log IP / DNS requests as a matter of policy.

There are some countries that have data retention laws and other weird things going on with their ISP’s which require them to log your activities, which they can conveniently use in analytics and sell that data to the advertising industry for example. There’s also geoblocks to take into consideration.

A VPN will give you an extra layer of security / flexibility in this regard.

  5. > Trying to make sense of all the desire to pay for VPNs anonymously. What is the benefit?

Payment details usually contain your real name. However, getting your name based on home IP address usually requires a court order binding your ISP to reveal it.

So if you pay anonymously but use your VPN with your real IP, you have added additional hop to unmasking your identity.

  6. VPN would know your IP, but they would have to get cooperation from your ISP to find out your real name and address.

  7. I only use VPN’s to get around geolocking stuff, such as sports streaming services locking you out from viewing games in your “home area”.

If you’re doing anything where you *really* need anonymity then a VPN isn’t even close to all you need. There’s another comment here discussing TOR that has a couple of good suggestions along those lines.

  8. Even if you didn’t pay anonymously, all any authorities would know is that you have and probably use a VPN. They still can’t snoop at your activity or prove any wrongdoing.

  9. There is indeed an inherent level of trust put to the VPN service company with regards to your real IP and activity. Through no fault of the VPN, however, payment for that service can be traced through other organizations, compromising your identity. Being associated with a VPN can get you in trouble in some jurisdictions (e.g. China). Anonymizing the payment reduces those with details of your transactions, notably banks and credit companies. It is just another layer of protection, neither the first or last in efforts to protect yourself online.

  10. Good point.

Typically, if you are going throught the hassel of annonymously paying for a VPN service you are taking multilayered approach. Where you are layering together TOR and VPN.

TOR can anonymize your traffic into the VPN. At which point you tunnel back into TOR.

  11. After making anonymous payment and routing via tor to connect… And then login Netflix and Facebook.
    Ironic.
Furthermore all the no logs claims by vpn are nothing more than advertising.
