  1. It sounds like you would be better off putting it on each device. It is then easy to turn on and off whenever you want, as well as changing servers. On the router you will be forced to have all devices on it at the same time, and on the same server, and would need to log in to the router to turn it on and off or change servers, which will again apply to all devices.

You can get routers that will allow you to specify certain device go over the vpn (most Asus routers as you can then install Merlin’s firmware to allow this), but you still have the situation that they will be on the vpn all the time and would need to change the router settings to turn it on and off. It’s not hard, but it involves logging in to the router setup page in a browser which is not as simple as just disconnecting the software on a specific device.

The other factor is your connection speed. Routers will usually cap at around 30-40mb because their processors are not well suited to encryption (with the exception of very few, like the Asus AC86u which can handle it much better due to its processor), so if your connection is faster than this then you are again probably better off putting it on each device as they will likely be able to run faster over the vpn.

  2. yes… but each computer running it, counts as a ‘connection’ while if you use it on your router… its ‘one connection’

  3. Nothing to worry about. The “VPN on each device” is the most common home-level solution. You only need to install a client on each device.
