   only the VPN provider can see what you are doing on the internet. However as long as you are going to sites that use https you won’t be leaking payment information.

   Depends where you are in the world but I’m not aware of any countries in the western world where they are

   > Can/should you be connected to a vpn 24/7? are there any downsides to this?

   You are trusting all your traffic to the internet provider and potentially, depending on where you choose to exit, putting your traffic under another countries rule.

   They don’t care, as long as you pay your monthly bill.

   If you live in a very oppressive dictatorship country, then you could expect a 3:00 am knock on the door.

   It makes no difference.
