Well if my understanding is correct, HTTPS encrypts your data, and that’s exactly what a vpn does so when you visit a site, HTTPS or not, your data is encrypted
In case of HTTP, using a VPN just shifts the risk from your home LAN and ISP to the ISP between the VPN server and the site. With HTTP, that ISP could read all the traffic, inject ads, etc.
Now, using a VPN in that situation might still be worthwhile, since your home LAN might have unencrypted Wi-Fi with other people listening, and the VPN’s connection wouldn’t. And the traffic coming out of the VPN server would be mixed with traffic from a thousand other users, making it hard to distinguish your traffic from theirs. And the traffic coming out of the VPN server would have the server’s IP address, not your home IP address.
