  1. As someone from Michigan, this headline baffled me. I see a *lot* of Ontario plates around here, especially in Detroit. And on the contrary, I see a lot of Michigan plates when I visit Windsor

  2. So in short, this police officer didn’t even know the laws in their own state; how responsible.

  3. How stupid can the officer be? Every third plate on I75 is an Ontario or Michigan citizen heading north. Maybe has Canada and Columbia confused.

  4. Wasn’t it at the ATL airport (or just American airports in general guessing ATL since it’s the busiest) where TSA was turning away residents from Washington D.C. claiming that it didn’t exist and their ID was a fake

  5. I used to get arrested a lot for curfew even though I was always with someone over 21 who my mom knew I was with and the cops didn’t know the statute so she would pick me up and drop me off where ever I was headed before cops got me…

  6. Got a $1500 ticket in PA for having a valid PA license and an expired SC license. Judge said it was the worst bullshit he ever saw in traffic. Still had to pay $500 to the lawyer (personal friend) and $200 to towing. Fucker towed my car from a legal parking spot too.

  7. Even if it wasn’t legal, jail for driving without a license? In KY you basically get a warning and someone has to come drive your car home for you.

  8. > “Make sure that you have your passport or supporting documents along with your driver’s licence,” said Bennett. “I know I would if I was in a foreign country.”

I wonder is she’d be so glib if Canada showed reciprocal treatment of their citizens here in Canada. I can guarantee that most Americans do not drive in Canada with a wealth of documentation, especially those that travel back and forth all the time.

  9. Sounds like some scam the cops down there do to extort some cash from unsuspecting people.

  10. Hmm. Similar thing happened to me. Pulled over in CA for expired tags( first car, I didn’t even know you have to renew the sticker every year), found out about my Canadian drivers license, served me with a misdemeanor ticket for unlicensed driving. When I went to court, the judge was baffled why they bothered to give me a ticket in the first place since my license is legit, pulled all the fines and told me I was free to go. Wasted about a day and a half.

  11. The fact that she wants an apology more than anything else seems like a very Canadian way of thinking. Personally I’d be suing them for everything I could get. You would think at the very least the magistrate who set the $800 bail would’ve been familiar with the law.

  12. She should obtain a lawyer and file suit against the officer, the Police Chief, and the Police Department.

  13. I wish the advice given was “make sure to not constantly hire incompetent people for your police force”

  14. And now that mugshot will be posted all over the Internet as part of the legalized exortion racket that continues to flourish online because there is no laws penalizing them and she will have a tough time getting a job

  15. I’m sure the officer’s six months of training prepared her for this situation /s

  16. I can’t believe how ridiculous this is. I would have a very, very hard time staying calm enough to just roll with it, knowing full well the charges would be dismissed. I’d definitely be considering suing also.

On a wider note, this kind of thing (border control also) is why many, many people are choosing to avoid the USA altogether. If I have the choice between taking a flight with a connection in the US vs a more expensive flight that doesn’t stop there, I’m willing to pay more. I know a lot of people who feel the same way.

I’m Canadian and used to really enjoy visiting the US. It’s a great country filled with a lot of really great people, but it feels like the current culture in law enforcement in the US is to assume everyone foreign is a criminal.

  17. This cop was short on brownie points and pulled whatever card possible to load up charges.

  18. Ha! She just wants an apology. How Canadian.

Unfortunately, here in America where our fascist and antagonistic law enforcement don’t know our own laws and can murder with impunity, no apologies are forthcoming.
