  1. OvenVPN is a protocol, most commercial VPN providers support openvpn.

I’m personally against running my own VPN on a VPS for the following reasons:

    1) you have to be sure of your configuration.

    2) even if you don’t keep any logs, the VPS providers probably will. You have to trust them just like you’d trust a VPN provider.

    3) VPS providers don’t base their business around your security. VPN providers do.

    4) Having more people using the same IP provides additional anonymity.

———- sorry for the one-sided information. I’m sure someone will be able to educate us both on benefits of running your own server.

  2. I see them as totally different things. I’d use openvpn or wireguard to remotely get into my own network or the one i have set up somewhere else. But if I want anonymity or a server somewhere complitly different i’d use a service. Correct me if I’m wrong.

  3. The biggest advantage of running your own OpenVPN daemon on VPS is that you know what code is running on your server and that the VPN can be configured not to keep logs. Most VPN providers, if not all, keep logs. The downside to it is that the VPS is in your name and everything you do can be traced back to you. Also, your hosting provider will log everything you do regardless of whether you use a VPS or dedicated infrastructure. It’s their bandwidth and they will always monitor inbound/outbound connections.
