OpenVPN is pretty robust solution. The only issue is complicated configuration management, so I wrote a web-based config generator:

If you’ve got an Ubuntu-Server you can try Pritunl, it has a very nice Interface to manage the users and the OpenVPN Server.
For the computer nerd, it isn’t that difficult. And the hardware to run your office OpenVPN server can be very cheap, like around $50 (using a Raspberry PI-like device).
What companies try to do, is to sell the most expensive rubbish to non-technical people so that they can make a massive profit. Be careful of companies like these.
Try asking in your local Linux User group — and who knows, maybe you could make a service out of this, helping other small businesses who don’t want to spend thousands and thousands for something which is basically free.
