Easily defeated: don’t log in to Google. That’s the step that is compromising your identity.
Using a VPN serves two primary purposes. First, it hides the details of your network traffic from your ISP. Your ISP will know that you are connected to a VPN, but beyond that they will not have any information about what you are doing online (assuming your VPN is setup correctly and not leaking information such as DNS lookups).
Secondly, the VPN will mask your IP address. When you visit a website their servers will see the request originate from the VPN IP address, instead of the IP address that your ISP has assigned you. That means that your IP address can not be used to uniquely identify your network traffic. Neither can another node on the network, a “man-in-the-middle” eavesdropper, uniquely identify your network traffic by IP address (they may be able to do so by browser fingerprinting).
You have correctly concluded that a VPN is not, in itself, sufficient to browse the web anonymously. A VPN will not block cookies. If you log into facebook or google then they will be able to track you, VPN or not.
A VPN is only a tool in the tool kit of anonymity. Just like how you can’t build a piece of furniture from scratch with just a saw, you can’t obtain anonymity with just a VPN. Likewise, you can’t build furniture _without_ the saw either.
As you pointed out, you can still be tracked even with a VPN. However, that doesn’t make the VPN “useless”, just like how a saw isn’t useless just because it can’t be used to hammer nails.
A VPN shields your network traffic from your ISP until it reaches its destination, and shields your true IP address from the site you’re visiting. That’s all it does. Like the saw, it has a set purpose to solve a particular problem.
You need to employ additional tools to deal with those threats the VPN can’t cover. For example, a hardened browser that blocks tracking cookies, as well as requests to tracking scripts and beacons. This would be your hammer.
But just like the VPN, this browser can’t provide anonymity by itself, since the website would have your true IP address. If you want to build furniture, you need both your saw _and_ your hammer. And your level. And your measuring tape. And your pencil.
You can’t build something, or obtain anonymity, with just a single tool. You need all of them in your kit if you want to accomplish your goal.
You’ve made the assumption that a VPN provides anonymity. That assumption was wrong.
well this comes into the realm of a functioning ad blocker… and blocking google analytics on every website you visit.. there are extensions to delete cookies after you close the tab for that website…
yes. this isn’t the sole purpose for using a vpn however.
Use a separate dedicated VM (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) or separate hardware PC to do any traffic that you TRUELY want hidden and anonymous. That being said, it would be an extra step for law enforcement to associate your VPN IP with your google account etc. It certainly can be done easy enough, but the agencies that have access to those databases aren’t all “willy nilly” able to gain access to that information.
Anyway, long story short “just in case” use a dedicated PC thats not logging into any of your common personal accounts.
Yeah, why are you still logging into Google?
You should know that every Google app/platform is basically spyware to make Google’s shareholders filthy sticking rich. Do you like being the product? There are many alternatives out there. I’d start with email.
Also, there are good browser extensions to block this crap. Check out privacytools.io for more info on the topic.
Have a browser for your regular stuff. Have another browser for privacy. In the privacy browser, don’t log into anything like Facebook/Google.
Have a VPN and use TOR as your browser? And just never have anything else open (google, FB etc.) when TOR is running? I mean that’s how TOR is supposed to be run for any real privacy.
I might just have this in my head and could be totally wrong. But I’m fairly sure that even with a VPN you’re only (almost) completely private if you use TOR and have nothing else on your computer open at the time.
