1. I mean pretty much any real desktop or server processor will kick the pants out of any processor in a router.

   Might be worth looking into building a PC and using PFSense or something similar

2. Try wireguard vpn, it runs in the kernel and is much faster than OpenVPN for a given cpu.

3. Try an Asus AC86u, processor is very good at handling AES encryption. It maxed out my 220mb connection using 256bit AES-GCM with plenty of room to spare (although it’s not going to go to 1gb, I would guess 400-500mb).

   Failing that, get a router that can run open WRT and use wireguard, it’s hugely more efficient than openvpn and will run a huge amount faster on the same processor than openvpn will.

   Failing that, any reasonable x86 processor should be pretty good at handling it, even ones a few years old.
