From a criminal standpoint if I was looking to steal a housemates information I’d use a key logger. Effective and simple to use. Anything else seems like to much work. Crime is about opportunity. Don’t give them the opportunity, lock your computer when you’re away and check the back of your pc regularly.
I think a VPN should be adequate without a VPS as long as your devices have strong passwords and reasonable physical security.
Make sure account data like passwords are not stored on your devices. I recommend a password manager like lastpass. Change any passwords involving credit cards or bank accounts to a long random password and keep them in your password manager. Make sure you have a long but rememberable password on your password manager account itself, and do not let your computer remember that password.

With HTTPS, no one is able to see the traffic (actual content transferred) to websites anyways, only stuff like headers and IP addresses, even if they use tools like wireshark to sniff the WiFi. When using a VPN, your whole traffic outgoing is encrypted and it looks like you’re sending all data to one IP (the VPN Server).
Anyways, if someone really wants to see what you’re doing, he would choose easier ways, like using a keylogger or finding a way to install a Trojan on your PC.
I know there’s no chance I’ll ever find out, but all I ever what to hear about in these threads is whatever secret thing you’re up to.
