I’m interested in getting a premium one, however, I dont know if I’m the right consumer. I get the larger corporates are selling our information, but what about average Joe’s like myself. Do we need it for regular stuff? What are the benefits, drawbacks, etc?
Do videos run faster/slower, gaming ping faster/slower, etc?
Nothing really runs faster or slower, unless your VPN doesn’t have the bandwidth to match your current internet speed.
VPNs are like a tunnel to a server. Nobody can see into the tunnel. Your data goes through that tunnel to the VPN sever, which then communicates with the outside world. The outside world sends their messages back to the server. The server sends those messages through the tunnel to you.
This is the ideal situation for paid VPNs. Free VPNs will not provide such protection. Those are like clear tunnels and everyone can see what’s inside.
Edit: the upside to this is privacy, especially in the event of a Man-in-the-Middle attack or a pineapple router. Your data is seen by nobody on your network.
The way I see it. You are paying someone to trust they wont sell the info your ISP would have sold.

About your question: it depends on the VPN provider, some provide fast and some slow.
You must test them
A VPN is like an invisible get away car with no license plate. It does its job until you pull through the drive through at checkers. Eg use Facebook or log into Google. A VPN protects you and your isp from catching heat from various sources
