  1. all vpn traffic will be datacenter’s traffic, and no one cant idenfy who at home with vpn sent what.

  2. EDIT: somewhat who knows more than me commented a much shorter, and much simpler answer than mine. Disregard this comment.

So I’m no expert about vpns, so don’t take my word for this, but I’d guess they would have your IP routed through another server, but really there’s no way to fully cloak your IP, it’s more that you can make it just a huge pain to trace it back to source. Mainly it’s that connecting through a vpn will stop most people and sites from tracing your IP, and your isp from seeing what you are doing online. Like I said though, I’m no expert, so don’t take my word for any of this.

All in all, I wouldn’t be too concerned if you’re worried about your data privacy, as long as your VPN is logless, and the the data encryption is secure, your data will be fairly protected.

  3. >a lot of VPN providers promise not to log any metadata which would include the IP a subscriber has connected from.

I dont like the limitation of the word “metadata” in this context. This is like MS saying they wont use the content of your documents for advertising purposes (they just use it for ALL OTHER purposes).

    >Is it possible that the VPN’s ISP could still be logging incoming connections to the servers that they are technically hosting?

    Yes.

    >They couldn’t say who used what IP or what they did on the service, but they could nevertheless have a list of all IPs connected to the server at any given time?

    Yes.

    >most have told me that the ISP/datacenter could not see where incoming connections are coming from due to OpenVPN

They cannot see what is being “tunneled” to the vpn server, but “incoming connections” is a bit ambiguous.

  4. The only way to cloak your source IP while using a VPN is to connect to TOR FIRST, BEFORE connecting to the VPN. There are only a handful of VPNs that support this kind of connection.

  5. It’s fairly simple to log all your inbound traffic that goes through your firewall, and yes hosting providers can and do have a list of IP addresses, timestamped at that.
