They will know that you secretly play ‘Hello Kitty Island Adventure’ even though you tell everyone you play PUBG.
Seriously though, you don’t need a VPN for games
Also, if you do just take note of which service you use.
As far as I know, if you use a VPN for **Battle.net they don’t care** but they also wont help you if something happens while you’re using it. Eg: Account hacked, or something of the sort.
For **Steam**, if you’re caught using it your **account may be deleted permanently** (it’s to stop price manipulation since games may be cheaper in different countries. You should be okay playing games through a VPN but it’s against their TOS to use one at all)
Edit: “You agree that you will not use IP proxying *or other methods* to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, Valve may terminate your access to your Account.” https://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement/

I sometimes turn my VPN on is the Europe servers are shit and wanna play with good ping on other ones.
It could be useful if you are playing a P2P game like GTA V, since you connect directly to other users. The VPN will help to protect your location from other users.
Concerning your ISP, it may be good for your general privacy. Maybe your ISP looks at what game servers you connect to and uses that for advertising or data selling.
You actually should avoid using your VPN while playing games. Valve’s terms of service say they can terminate your account if they think you’re using a VPN or Proxy to change your location.
