Usually routers struggle to run a vpn client at speed. This largely depends on what type of vpn and your available broadband connection though.
In other words – routers are slow and it may slow down your traffic. Not to mention some sites like Netflix will block known vpns.
If you want all the machines on your LAN to access the Internet through your VPN, you should set it up on your router for these 2 mains reasons :
– If you plan to get a new VPN provider some day, you will just have to set up your router only and note on every machine on LAN,
– If there are low power machines on your LAN and you set up your VPN on all the machines, a few processing time will be stolen by your VPN client app which will continuously encrypt/decrypt the incoming/outgoing flow.
If you router is able to do that, my opinion is you should use it to set up your VPN 😉
You can use a decent router and flash DD-WRT so it can connect as openvpn client and then allow your LAN to use it. The downsize is that services like Netflix will complain you are using a VPN and won’t connect.
