1. I’m hosting my own vpn to never get affected by VPN ban waves on commercial VPNs in my country. It is also good for not having a device limit. I also dont have to fill captcha forms that pop up a lot when using a commercial VPN. Finally, netfix etc does not ban my VPN ip because it is not known as a vpn. On the otherhand, for privacy, obviously you are right. I think not using any vpn would be better than hosting your own vpn for privacy.

2. Due to your hoster has your contact adress, you only have better privacy in public networks. If you connect from home to the vpn it is the same like your isp.

   Share your own vpn with friends so nobody really no what traffic comes from you(yes, your hoster can anyway check from which ip adress the traffic comes from, but it will not appear outgoing).

   Own Cloud? E.g. you can encrypt all data with the built in tool from Nextcloud. So only you can see your data.

3. In the vpn case, the reason you would host it on a vps would be that you are trusting OVH is more private than another normal VPN in terms of logs. The only one in control of the data is you and the hosting provider, and in some cases they are fairly secure because commercial customers expect fairly high privacy. It really is a matter of do you trust a vpn host to keep your data private or do you trust a hosting provider company? Also you can then configure the vpn how you want. So if you want to use an RSA 4096 key to secure the auth, you can, etc.

   For the server thing, it can be easier to store data on a server that can have more storage capacity and resources. They also are usually super good about disk security (google, not that I would recommend them for a private vps, boasts 99.9% drive security. These vps companies use raid and redundancy so you wouldn’t have to risk a drive failure on your server, vs a local device.) they also often have faster connections so if you needed to connect in from another device it would usually be fast connection. you could use full disk encryption and SSL to reduce chances the hosting provider could read any of it, but once again it’s a trade off of whether you would rather have it kept local with the risks associated with such, or trust a provider. It all boils down to your threat level and to what extent you want to make trade offs. It is way better to use Nextcloud and a good private vps company than it is to trust google drive though.
